Released in the first quarter of 2015, the Falcon Zero F170 is a very feature rich camera with an extremely competitive price. The box comes packed with extras such as a CD with the (windows) GPS software, the instructions, the charger cable (which is around 11 feet long) and a power converter that allows you to plug into 12v cigarette lighter or a usb powered port. A suction mount, 32GB memory card and a GPS antenna. The instructions are well written and printed making setup very easy.
|Falcon Zero F170 at a glance||Price||Our Rating||Awards|
The camera is claimed to have several functions over and above a dash cam, such as digital camera, webcam replacement etc. Although it does a serviceable job as a digital camera, allowing you to perhaps take photos of any damage sustained in an accident, it’s not really any better than a good quality smartphone camera. It is also quite weak as a webcam, performing under a mid-range dedicated webcam with grainy zoom. However as a dashcam, this is one of the best units on the market.
Falcon Zero F170 Lens
The Falcon Zero F170 pack some great technology into it’s 170 degree wide angle lens such as a world class F1.6 six glass lens and WDR functionality, allowing the camera to adjust itself to suit the lighting conditions, always capturing the best possible picture day or night. The device is capable of recording Full HD 1080p footage at 30fps as you would expect from a camera such as this..
Falcon Zero F170 Hardware
What’s most surprising about this camera is the sheer number of premium features packed in whilst not skimping on build quality. There are features on this device that you would only expect to find on a camera, double the F170’s price such as GPS and the motion detection parking mode. The GPS allows you to geo-tag the video footage so you can track your journey on the Falcon Zero Player software provided. As noted, the device is very well put together and feels incredibly solid in the had. The materials used are of the highest quality and it really feels as good as it looks. We were very impressed with the looks of the device as well.

Falcon Zero F170 Features
Full HD 1080p Video recording
The top of the range lens and processor allows you to record up to Full HD 1080p footage at 30fps whilst making use of the wide angle 170 degree capture region to record as much as possible whilst driving, even recording number plates with excellent clarity
As soon as the engine is powered on, the F170 automatically powers on and starts recording in either continuous loop or Auto-On/Off mode with no human interaction past the initial setup. Fully automatic and hands off safety.
2.7″ Capacitive Touch Screen
The large 2.7″ screen is the perfect size for the device but doesn’t overly bloat the size of the whole unit. The screen allows for configuration, playback of captured video footage and as a screen for the digital camera function if you need to take photos of anything.
Built in GPS
The GPS antenna, when attached to the device, tracks your GPS co-ordinates allong with your footage. This allows you to view your route and even your speed later on either Google Maps or the Falcon Zero software.
The motion detection based parking mode keeps your vehicles safe even when you are not physially there by activating it’s recording when it detects motion in front of your vehicle. This works in tandom with the G-sensor, locking down any footage if an impact is detected.
HDMI 1.3 TV Output
The HDMI output allows you to plug the F170 directly into the HDMI input on most modern TVs and playback the footage you have captured. This means you can see the picture blown up on a big screen without the need for a PC
The F170 is a very new device and there has not been a lot of issues reported with it, but if we had to pick faults…
The included Falcon Zero software is only windows compatible and even then, needs to be run in compatibility mode when unsed in conjunction with Windows Vista/7/8.1. This isn’t a large issue as it still runs, just something to be aware of.
Not the best webcam
The device is touted as being able to be used as a webcam and whilst this is true, it’s not the best quality webcam, with a grainy picture when zoomed in. This only applied if you plan to remove your dash cam and regularly use it as a camera. You may be better served picking up a cheap dedicated web cam and will likely expereince a greater quality image.
Is the Falcon Zero F170 right for you?
This is a new release in 2015 and has taken the place as the best camera for the money on this site. It’s included premium features that you would expect to find on a camera double the price make this very feature rich camera for the price point and there is no punches pulled when it comes to the build quality.
This is a very easy camera to recommend and the camera I would recommend to anyone looking to pick up a good dash camera for a resonable price. Very simply put, buy this camera, you will not find a better one for anywhere near this price.
